Shiko gig: Crofty Carnival, Saturday 30th July 2007

Heyup. Shiko will be drumming at Croft Carnvial this Saturday — come and see us!

Crofty is a small village on the north coast of the Gower Peninsula (map here). I’m not 100% sure of the times yet, but I think it starts around noon. I should become certain tomorrow. It’ll probably be a smallish fun affair, drumming on foot as part of a parade, apparently. As usual with Shiko gigs I’m not completely sure what to expect. :-) There is talk of heading off to Pontardullais afterwards to do some busking in pubs (it’s their carnival this Saturday too).

Crofty gig: it pissed down, but relented for the march, gladly. We played borrowed samba instruments and no djembes, because rain + goatskins = sadness. ‘Twas fun: we led the march, about 50 or 60 or so people on foot and three floats. Bash tagged along sportingly, grooving and twirling her rainbow umbrella stylishly. There were super soakers and water balloons. The march ended up at Llanmorlais Community Centre, where after about an hour and a cup of tea, we played again, this time under cover and on the djembes. I enjoyed this more than the march, at least in terms of playing/performance, as it was much more familiar ground, musically (for the march I was basically clave-ing on a baby frame drum). Then off to the Greyhound for a slap up meal.

A very nice day, then, but damp.
